The Place of Scraps Wins Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize

Hearty congratulations to Jordan Abel, whose first book of poetry, The Place of Scraps, has just won the Dorothy Livesay poetry prize! Winners of this and the other BC Book Prizes were announced on Saturday evening in Vancouver.

The Place of Scraps is Abel’s first book of poetry. Through erasure techniques, it excavates the anthropological writings of Marius Barbeau, revealing layers of meaning and responding from a First Nations perspective to one who thought the end was in sight for First Nations peoples. Abel makes use of text as well as historical images in this accomplished and attractive book.
