Now that it’s December 19th, we feel it’s fair to say ‘tis (officially) the season! At Talonbooks, we have an annual tradition of sharing a cozy holiday snippet from one of our existing or forthcoming books as a seasonal offering. This year, please enjoy this excerpt from I Saw Three Ships: West End Stories by Bill Richardson.
“Used, yes, but gently. Barely, even. Leonard Cohen, walking home through the falling snow on this Christmas Eve, making his way down a Gastown alley, the brick walls of the surrounding buildings vibrant with graffiti and gang tags, is the second person to wear that gown. Grace Rainier (née Thatcher) was the first, a long time ago, way back in the spring of 1952. It was Grace’s best friend, Shelagh, who made the modifications – tasteful, yet daring – to Simplicity Pattern 3958. The work of it! So many hours of designing, of stitching the frothy, multilayered confection of ivory, tulle, taffeta, of amply adorning the frosty bodice with guipure lace, with seed pearls.”
Happy Holidays, Talonites! We hope the last weeks of your 2024 are restful and kind. See you in the new year!
