We are thrilled to report that Jane Rule’s poignant autobiography Taking My Life is now available!
A year after her passing in 2007, Linda M. Morra, a scholar and researcher of Canadian women authors, discovered among Rule’s papers at the University of British Columbia an unpublished autobiography titled Taking My Life. The discovery was an astounding one because it covered Rule’s formative years to the age of 21, a part of her life she had seldom mentioned in her writing.
Here is what M.A.C. Farrant had to say about the book in a recent Globe & Mail review:
Rule the realist has illuminated with insight, joyousness, tenderness and even pain the influences that were to shape her as a writer and as a sexual being. It’s an absorbing read. Her great openness about relationships, her insistence on the creation of community, her pursuit of truth – she “studied the great (male) liars in college in order to find out how to tell the truth” – is very much in evidence here.
This is a must-have for anyone interested in the life and literature of Jane Rule.
