This Saturday at 10 a.m., Ria Bleumer, who last managed now-defunct Duthie Books, will open Sitka Books & Art, on West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano, as an answer to what she describes as a backlash towards corporate book retailers.
Bleumer is confident her store will succeed because of a handpicked inventory and strong focus on local authors. The store plans to feature the work of artists from Granville Island’s Crafthouse and to become a hub for community and cultural events.
“I have knowledge of our customer base because I worked in [the industry] … for 16 years,” she said. “Customers will find books they won’t see anywhere else and ones you see everywhere else, but not as many, making us unique.”
So come on down on September 18th and support your local independent bookstore!
