God and the Indian at the Firehall Arts Centre

Award-winning playwright Drew Hayden Taylor explores the aftermath of a life in residential schools. While pan-handling in front of a Tim Horton’s, Johnny, a Cree woman, is shocked to see a face she recognizes from her childhood spent at a residential school. Wanting to hear the truth of what happened from his lips, she follows Anglican Assistant Bishop George King to his office and confront him. As Johnny sifts through her memories, the two are hurled back 40 years into their shared past at St. David’s School.

With the Truth and Reconciliation Commission working to find truth, healing and reconciliation for those affected by the residential schools and for Canadians as a whole, God and the Indian, will leave you asking: How can these wounds be healed? How do we build a new relationship of trust?

God and the Indian runs April 6-20 2013 at the Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver.
