Fiction at Fifty: University of Lethbridge Playwriting Competition

Playwrights, start your engines! The University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada wants you, and the deadline is St. Patrick’s Day (Monday!). The following is a recent press release:

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the University of Lethbridge, the University’s Department of Theatre and Dramatic Arts is seeking commissioning proposals for a full-length play to be produced in October, 2017 as part of the department’s main season of plays. All playwrights are invited to submit proposals.

A jury will select three proposals from those submitted and each playwright will be offered a $2000 commissioning contract to write a full-length draft within 18 months. A second jury evaluates the three completed drafts and selects the winning play. The winning playwright receives an additional $2000 prize plus travel expenses to attend workshop(s) of the play at the University of Lethbridge as well as royalties when the play is produced.

  • Playwrights must be Canadian citizens or hold permanent resident status.
  • Playwrights may only submit one commission proposal.
  • Plays must be full-length, with a minimum running time of 75 minutes and include at least 10 characters.
  • Plays must be original creations, not adaptations or translations.
  • All genres are eligible, including Theatre for Young Audiences and musical theatre.

Proposals should describe preliminary ideas about narrative, characters, topic, and/or theme. Playwrights should also attach a CV/resume detailing playwriting and other relevant theatre experience and, if unproduced at a professional theatre, a copy of a previously completed full length plays.

Proposals must be received on or before midnight, March 17, 2014. Emailed submissions are acceptable.
