Straddling the Divide: Languages and Bridges

Jessica Moore is a French-English translator who most recently translated Maylis de Kerangal’s novel, Birth of a Bridge – the story of a handful of men and women of various backgrounds and classes, who assemble around the construction of a giant suspension bridge in Coca, a fictional city somewhere in a mythical and fantastic California. Moore recently visited a certain inspirational bridge and sent us – and you – a few photos and words about it.

Dear Talonites,

I’ve just driven across the other bridge, the Golden Gate, and it was covered in a half-cloud as I crossed, looking so much like the cover of our book.

Then I went to the City Lights bookstore – the famous one, home of the beat poets – and was browsing (not even looking for the book) when there it was! So good to see!

Warm wishes from northern California now, heading toward Vancouver for the launch on Wednesday,

Birth of a Bridge is available for $16.95.
